DH & 4X LIVE

After an eventful World Cup in 2008 (rain and more rain?!?), the 2009 Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano will be back in Bromont from 31 July to 2 August 2009.

The Union Cycliste Internationale has awarded the organising committee with a triple sanction, which includes the cross country Olympic (XCO), downhill (DHI) and four-cross (4X) events.  The 4X course earned the prize for the best line in the world in 2008, the DHI course has been improved this year, and Ski Bromont is developing a completely new XCO course that will measure up to the needs of the best international athletes.

The director of the event, Mr Richard Deslandes, has no doubt about the quality of the site. “After the 2008 experience, Ski Bromont has promised an exceptional site that measures up to the expectations of the tens of thousands of spectators who came to see the event in 2008.  The 4X track line is insane, the DHI course will require the best of the competitors, and the completely new XCO track will please even the most passionate mountain bikers.  After the event, these courses will be inherited by the Bromont National Cycling Centre and the athletes who train there.”

Let us not forget that the Bromont Cycling Centre is one of the two training centres for the Canadian National Team for track, road, BMX and mountain bike disciplines.

According to Mr Deslandes, “the downhill line, which has been slightly modified since last year, requires racers to ride in a treacherous environment that includes rocky formations, wooden and abrupt downhill sections.  There are several tight corners, jumps and obstacles which create a technically difficult course that many kamikaze downhill riders would not even dare imagine.”

“The completely new XCO course will offer a combination of difficult uphill climbs and technical downhill sections.  Athletes often say that Bromont is real mountain biking!”

“Finally, having won the prize for the best 4X course in the world in 2008, the 4X course is quite simply spectacular - huge jumps, rocky sections, boarded descents and massive burms follow each other, and then there is the only corkscrew in the world!”  4X is where four riders race on a short extremely uneven course, similar to a BMX track. 4X competitions are really exciting, ideal for television and the perfect spectator-sport.”

The best international mountain bikers, male and female, will therefore be in Bromont to fight out another leg of the Nissan UCI World Cup.  This is your opportunity to see and encourage the Canadian athletes that will be competing, including, amongst others: the French Canadian Marie-Hélène Prémont, silver medal winner at the Olympic Games in Athens and winner of the 2008 World Cup; Catherine Pendrel who came fourth in the Beijing Olympics; and Geoff Kabus who is currently ranked 5th in the world.
